Coffee consumption in India is at a very low level of consumer penetration. The per capita consumption numbers in India stands at 62 gms compared to as much as 15,000 gms in the robust coffee consumption countries of the world like Norway, Sweden and the US.
Indian coffee has seen some semblance of revival of interest in the beverage through the efforts of the cafe segment which started opening up in India in 1993. To date, there are a total of 891 cafes in the organised retail sector of India.
Bangalore saw the addition of the 892nd cafe on Thursday with Flava, a cafe effort put together by the grower-entrepreneur trio of Marvin/Vivian Rodrigues, Bina Gurjer, coffee growers from the Coorg-Chikmagalur area.
The cafe was inaugurated by Chairman of the Coffee Board of India G V Krishna Rau, in the presence of Coffee Board member Harish Bijoor and cup tasting expert Sunalini Menon. Krishna Rau hailed the effort of the coffee grower segment for bringing such efforts as Flava into the market to aid coffee consumption. Harish Bijoor spoke of the big gap in the segment. He said though there are 892 cafes (including Flava), the actual ability of the Indian market to absorb cafes by existing consumer demand is 4,500.
Flava is a new offering of the fine cafe chain in India. Apart from a select collection of coffees from across origins (cold and hot), the Flava Cafe offers a range of delectable food offerings to cater to every Bangalorean. Flava is located at 10, C.J.D'Souza Road, Off Hayes Road (Behind Devatha Plaza).
