Keeping with the Valentine month is a sugary offering from the house of Disney. Kevin Lima’s Enchanted opens in typical fairy-tale style with a pop-up book and a girl-next-door Giselle whose life’s desire is to experience a true love’s kiss. Barely five minutes into crooning about the wondrous liplock and swaying with her furry cronies, her prayers are answered. Prince Edward appears at her doorstep, matching every ounce of her obsession for love!
But before the ‘happily ever after’, there is the quintessential evil witch or step mother to defeat, in this case a deadly brew of the two— the prince’s step mother (also an evil witch!) who is determined to keep the lovebirds apart so that she can have the throne forever and ever. Minutes before her wedding, the witch pushes Giselle down a well “to a place where there are no happily ever afters”. Present day New York City, it seems (Wonder what Carrie Bradshaw has to say to that!). Giselle (Amy Adams) finds herself in the arms of divorce attorney Robert Phillip (Dempsey), a widower with a six-year-old daughter. The perfect ending?
Nope, we’re not there yet! Just when Robert is beginning to find Giselle’s falsetto conversations a wee bit amusing, Prince Edward (Marsden) lands up in the big, bad City to rescue his damsel in distress. And the plot thickens...
Enchanted starts off with pure animation and switches to characters in flesh and blood somewhere in between. It is a musical (with three of its songs nominated for ‘Best Song’ at the Oscars), a rom-com and a spoof of past Disney films, all rolled into one.
This light-hearted film can be a temporary distraction for your senses if they are recovering from the jarring sight of heart balloons sticking out of every nook and corner of Bengalooru. A possible side effect: you will chant “Aa aa aa aa aa...” and expect birdies and chipmunks to appear out nowhere to tidy up your pad, and give you a pedicure while they are at it!
