Tulips in Bangalore? Yes, it is true. Tulip is a beautiful flower which is normally grown at places where the temperature is very cold. Mrs. Malathi Prabhakar got the bulbs from Colorado, US November last and planted them in her backyard. She is all pleased to see the bright orange coloured flower, for the first time in her life. Measuring 22 cms from earth, the stem has a 4 cms flower at the top. According to Dr. S.V. Hittalmani, Additional Director of Horticulture, it is a very rare instance of tulip being grown in Bangalore as the weather conditions here are not conducive for its growth. He said, that out of several varieties existing in the world, only a few have been found to grow in New Delhi. Under ideal climatic conditions, it can remain fresh in the plant for at least 15 days. The Tulip show held in winter each year in MughalGardens at Rashtrapathi Bhavan, is open to public. Photo by T L Prabhakar, Bangalore
