Reeling from the after-shock of the attack on the Panjim police headquarters late on Tuesday night, which left 32 police personnel injured, the Goa police have booked unattached MLA Babush Monserrate and his wife Jennifer under Section 307 of the IPC. Four of his supporters have also been charged with attempt to murder.
More arrests were likely to follow, Director General of Police B S Brar said. The former minister has been remanded to seven days police custody while his wife will be in judicial custody for a week.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat justified the “strong action” against the MLA, implying that he had breached the limits in leading a huge mob to attack the town police station to force the release of his supporter.
“He should have come and made a representation before the government. No one will be allowed to take the law into their hands,” Kamat said.
“In all my 31 years in the police force, I have never seen a police station attacked in such a brutal, Naxalite-like manner,” DGP said.
