Hardcore Gandhians and followers of Gandhiji assembled together at the United Theological College auditorium to commemorate the 60th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. They came together to make the best of the evening of Gandhiji’s favourite hymns.
The evening featured tributes to the Father of the Nation from all over the world. The tribute began with words from historian Arnold Toynbee — “… it can already be forecast with some confidence that Gandhi's effect on human history is going to be greater and, more lasting than either Hitler's or Stalin's.’’
A pictorial profile captured scenes from Gandhi’s life against the moving sounds of his favourite bhajan — Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je (One who is a vaishnav) Peed paraayi jaane re (Knows the pain of others). The exposition of those scenes came clearly through the readings by family friend K V Rajagopal.
Mahatma’s favourite Christian hymns enthralled the audience, particularly the moving “When I survey the wondrous cross”. Gandhi’s favourite bhajans were sung by the IDL Blind Band and Cluny Convent concluded the evening with a captivating rendition of Handel’s Halleujah Chorus.
The highlight of the evening was the `window’ that recaptured the fateful day on 30 January 1948 – the AIR announcement, Raghupati Raghava Rajaram rendered by Kritika Sharma and Jawaharlal’s emotional speech, all read and well delivered by Gandhians.
It was one eventful evening down memory lane with the ‘Father of the Nation’.
