The State government has released Rs 5 crore for Dr Gangubai Hangal Gurukul Trust for establishment of Dr Gangubai Hangal National Centre for Hindustani Music (formerly known as National Centre for Hindustani Music), at the foothills of Nrupathunga Hills in Hubli. The first phase of the centre should be ready by February 2009.
According to sources, the trust has been constituted under the chairmanship of regional commissioner, deputy commissioner as co-chairman and heads of various departments as members. The trust held its first meeting two days ago and worked out aims and objectives. Already, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation had given five acres of land for the centre.
In the first phase, among other things, quarters for teachers, hostel for students and administrative office, construction of auditorium, library and recording room will be taken up.
