Asserting that “the climate change is real and potentially severe,” noted scientist Peter Rayner has warned that the coastal areas in Asia will be prone to flooding and fresh water levels will decline in major rivers.
Delivering a talk on "Climate Change- Impacts and Implications to Society" in Bangalore on Thursday, Dr Rayner, scientist at the Laboratory for Science of Climate and Environment, Paris, painted a grim picture of the condition of people in the Asian countries following the climate change saying they would be facing risk of diarrhoeal diseases.
Stating that rise in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) since 1950 has led to the enhanced greenhouse effect, Dr Rayner observed that any solution to control climate change must involve everyone.
He suggested countries to adopt methods to quantify and understand the processes controlling CO2 exchange between the earth’s surface and atmosphere.
State Legislative Council Chairman B K Chandrashekar said there was difficulty in driving the governmental agencies and also the people at large to understand the impact of global warming to initiate specific action agenda.
The difficulty was that climate change was visible over a period time and most of us do not see contemporary happenings as leading to a process.
