Croatia's Ivo Karlovic hammered 15 aces as he swept past German qualifier Mischa Zverev on Friday to book a place in the semifinals of the World Indoor Tournament in Rotterdam.
The world number 24 took just 55 minutes to end the run of Zverev 6-3, 6-1 and will face France's Michael Llodra for a place in the final.
Llodra edged out Dutch wildcard Robin Haase 7-6 7-6 in another last eight encounter.
Nadal stunned
Earlier, top seed Rafael Nadal was stunned 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Italian Andreas Seppi in the second-round . Seppi will now play Sweden’s Robin Soderling.
Roddick wins
Top seed Andy Roddick beat impressive Japanese teenager Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the San Jose Open on Thursday.
Nishikori won his first career title last week in Delay Beach but was no match for Roddick.
In other second round matches, towering American John Isner fought off three match points to upset third seed Tommy Haas 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, while second seed James Blake moved on with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jesse Levine.
Roddick will face another American, Mardy Fish, who beat Germany's Denis Gremelmayr 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Isner will face Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the quarterfinals. Taiwan’s Lu Yen-hsun overcame American Wayne Odesnik 6-4, 6-4.
Sunitha-Betina lose
Sunitha Rao’s campaign ended in the doubles event of the Copa Colsanitas Santander after her Argentine partner Betina Jozami and she lost their quarterfinal tie on Friday, reports PTI from Bogota.
The unseeded Indo-Argentine combine lost 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to top seeds Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic and American Bethanie Mattek in the Tier III event.
Sharapova sizzles
Russia's Maria Sharapova swept aside Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 6-1 on Friday to reach the Qatar Open semifinals and set up a revenge clash with Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska who beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 after the Slovak upset sixth seed Venus Williams in the previous round. But third-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic joined the long list of upset victims at the tournament when she lost 3-6, 4-6 to unseeded Li Na of China.
