South African Adrian Zaugg is excited about racing at home and in front of his fans in the A1 GP to be held here over the weekend.
The Cape Town native has had a good year with a sprint race win in Zandvoort (the Netherlands) and a feature race win at the previous round in Eastern Creek (Sydney). Naturally, Zaugg would like to carry that form here and rope in more points for Team South Africa, who are currently fourth on the points list (79).
"I hope I can do well at home,” he said. “It is very nice to be racing at home and there will be good crowds.”
Zaugg is also excited about the idea of having a street race. “The whole concept is good. It is more fun but we also need to be very careful and concentrate more since the track is a little tight. The other thing is that a street race is not that quick,” he opined.
The 20-year-old has been racing in Europe in the Formula BMW Series. Asked to compare his experiences in the BMW series and A1 GP, he said: “The BMW cars are slower and are good for the transition from karting to Formula 1. The A1 is a different concept.”
The ultimate dream for Zaugg, who idolises the late Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve, is to be in the top form of track racing. “It is a dream for me to be in F1. I hope to get there someday,” he said. But for now, he will be giving the other drivers a hard time in the A1 GP.
