Tension prevailed in different parts of Orissa including capital Bhubaneswar on Monday as students and members of women organisations held demonstrations protesting the alleged gangrape of a MCA student of Sambalpur university in western Sambalpur district.

The girl was rescued by local residents in a semi-nude and unconscious state on Sunday outside the university campus located at Burla near Sambalpur town. She has been admitted into a Sambalpur hospital.

The students of Utkal University here held a demonstration outside the campus demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved besides a thorough and detailed inquiry.

Rasta roko

Vehicular traffic on the national highway near Sambalpur came to a grinding halt on Monday morning as university students held a rasta roko protesting the incident.

Police had to be deployed inside the university in Burla in the evening after students attacked and ransacked the university building, besides attacking the houses of the faculty members.

Police sources said four people have already been arrested in connection with the case. A detailed probe into the incident is on.
