Child slips into open drain, dies
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Chaos reigned in Lottegollahalli locality near BEL ring road, Sanjaynagar police station limits on Tuesday morning, after a one -year-old boy slipped into the open drain, drank the sewage water and died on the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Muniyappa.

Police said that Muniyappa’s father had gone out to work, and his mother was busy inside the house when the incident took place. The child managed to sneak out of the house, and slipped into the open drain outside.  Unfortunately, no one noticed that the boy had fallen into the drain. The child drank the filthy water that was in the drain, and died on the spot.

The victim’s mother and neighbours noticed the body only hours later. As the news spread, angry locals called for a protest.

Traffic was blocked for more than three hours as they shouted slogans against the BBMP. The protesters demanded compensation, and urged authorities to take up cleaning work immediately.

Throughout BBMP areas, such open drains are left uncovered and there are umpteen unattended stagnated drains posing breeding place for mosquitoes etc. All these of course are the result of inaction and callousness on the part of BBMP authorities and they should be held responsible for such mishaps. What exactly are BBMP's Water and Sewerage Dept. are doing and what have they got to say for this calamity?
