With incidents of removal of turbans on the rise in Australia, the outraged Sikh community will take up the issue with the government to prevent recurrence of such incident in future.
President of the Brisbane Sikh Temple and a member of Sikh Council of Australia, Paramjit Singh Serai, said he would take up issue with federal Immigration Minister Chris Evans soon.
Admission denied
A Sikh boy was denied admission at a Brisbane school allegedly because his turban breached the school'’s uniform rules.
On Tuesday another incident was reported where 13 Sikhs wearing turbans and a Muslim woman in a veil were told by security staff at Brisbane Airport at the weekend to remove their headgear. “We’ll be asking the minister to look into that and basically to come back to us,” Serai said. “The turbans should not be removed for security, and at the same time, turbans are allowed at almost any other school, so why is this school (Ormiston) different to any other school?,” he added.
Discrimination
A Sikh policeman in Britain has won a racial discrimination case against the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) that rejected 12 applications from him to join it. Sangram Singh-Bhacker (40) is likely to be awarded a five-figure compensation by the tribunal.
