Skills For Adolescents (SFA) programme ‘Quest', implemented by Lions International, is aimed at students from class eight to 10 to help them develop positive social behaviour, commitment to families, resist negative pressures, celebrate cultural diversity and build citizenship skills through community service and regular class room interaction.
Trained teachers and resource personnel visit schools on a weekly basis and impart various skills through ‘interactive’ media to help each student acquire self-confidence, self-discipline, critical thinking, conflict management etc. The commemoration function of this programme was held on Feb 25 at JSS Public School, HBR Layout. The venue was teeming with students from various schools who received their book sets from the chief guest Lion P S Venkatachalami. The students also participated in the speech and hearing camp organised by a team of doctors from Dr Chandrasekhar’s Institute of Speech and Hearing.
The Governor advised students to “apply techniques” taught to them through this programme. Students expressed their affirmation by ‘putting to practice’ skills like self-confidence, self-discipline, community service etc.
Ten teachers, who had been trained to impart the SFA programme to students were honoured by Lions International with a special-cash incentive of Rs 1000 for their service along with the heads of institutions who had supported the programme. Usha Kumari, Associate Chairperson-Quest and Principal, Maxwell Public School under whose leadership the SFA program is being held said, “it’s a humbling gesture (SFA program) by teachers, who in spite of their regular schedule aid many adolescents to follow the right-path.”
SPHEAR ’08
The inter-collegiate cultural fest SPHEAR ’08 was organised by S R Chandrashekar Institute of Speech and Hearing on February 22 and 23, where more than five colleges from the city participating in various programmme.
SPHEAR is an inter-college cultural fest through which the college thought of building the relationship with other colleges of the city. Gagan Bajaj, Assistant General Secretary of the student association of the college says, “we started the fest this year and will continue every year to build our relation with other colleges to spread the awareness on speech and hearing.
That is why we have named the fest SPHEAR, which represents speech and hearing. Our college is one of the three colleges in the city which offer this course.” The college also placed a demonstration desk of speech and hearing for the audience and the participants.
