Citizens committee meetings proving futile in the district
DH News Service, Tumkur:
The Citizens Committee meetings which are being held at the district level and are meant to build harmonious relationship between the public and the police have raised several questions among the intelligentsia regarding the actual purpose of organising such meetings itself!

Question arises as to what these meetings which are being held from the past many years at all the police stations in the district with the purpose of reaching the public and solve their grievances are really reaching them?

The police officials who are responsible to provide information to the mass regarding the meetings and its importance have actually failed in doing it. The department which had ‘chosen’ some of the members of its choice and even after several years it has not bothered to change the committee members. Even today the same old members have been in the committee.

This was even echoed by the Central zone IGP T G Doreswamy at the Citizen's Committee meetings held at the Chilume Police Community hall organised by district police department.

Not alone the police department has to be blamed for this. Even the public’s negligence regarding the issue has effected the purpose. Most of the public do not even know the objectives behind holding the meeting. Worst is that they have not even bothered to know about those meetings too!

And what about the committee members who have a major role in participating in the meeting and finding solutions to the problems are all busy with? Here comes the shameful answer for this question. The so called members are are all busy in adulating the police department officials without even bringing to their notice regarding the problems faced by the public.

Fear of police
Fear of police department and further consequences is first of all a nightmare for the general public, for reasons unknown. And when there is an opportunity for the police officials to remove that unknown fear from the minds of the public and create harmonious relationship, why don't the police do it efficiently? Even today people take the help of influential persons or politicians to approach police station which is very pathetic in a democratic country like India.

However, some opine that tangible solution for the problem may be organising the meetings at various extensions or areas, other than always holding them in the police stations only. However, it is now upto the police officials to take up special programmes and make the meetings popular so that the public as well as the department would also benefit. SP P S Harsha should take the  matter seriously, opine the intelligentsia.
When Deccan Herald spoke to Central IGP T G Doreswami he expressed his displeasure and said that he has directed the district SP to form a team for it and revise the committee members who are a part of the committee since many years.

He has also directed the SP to reserve 30 per cent for women and limited the total number to 50 which should include honoraries, social workers, youth, all community members and others. It is only after the consent from the SP that such committees will come to existence.

In order to make the teams active he has also said that those who help in maintaining the law and order will be given a certificate and will be recognised, he added.
