Subtle expression of class.. regal... that’s designer Sayon Mitra’s collection for you. Bringing to Bangalore the designer wear of Sayon, who has dressed the rich and famous, is Mogra, housed at The Leela Palace.
Sayon’s collection was launched at a wine and cheese evening. And if fusion wear is your fashion statement then a Sayon Mitra label would make for a good pick. From shirts and sherwanis for men to spaghetti tops paired with chudi bottoms and dupatta, lehengas, trousers, soft jackets and exquisitely styled sarees for women, the store offers a wide range of Sayon’s collection. While bright shades have been put to good use, white, green and coffee colours in silk, georgette, chiffon, crepe and linen dominate Sayon’s couture line.
“This season it would do good to play it down with colours. Our clothing should look soothing to the eye,” says Sayon. Elaborating on his styling, he says, “Fit and finish assume great importance for me. If these two aspects are not right then why call it designer wear?”
Subdued glamour is what intrigues me. I want to make women look good and confident. Tailored, well-fit garment is what I like. You’ll find a lot of panelling and hand work in my pieces, he adds.
Sayon, who carries European and Victorian influences says that each of his pieces is no less than art for him. “Art and design are my passion. I treat each piece as a work of art and they are one-off pieces. I don’t repeat my work,” he adds. While his shirts are priced Rs 3,500 and above, sarees come with a price tag of Rs 25,000-75,000. The lehengas are Rs 90,000 and upwards.
Sayon has served as the costume designer and stylist for Jaya Bachchan, Om Puri and Mallika Sarabhai in the film `Love Songs: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’. This Kolkata designer is an alumnus of the London College of Fashion and has specialised in pattern making and hand embroidery.
