As many as 16 people have been killed in a train mishap in Udhana area of Surat district with three more persons succumbing to their injuries in the hospital, police said on Thursday.
Initial reports had said 13 people were killed when they were run over by a train late Wednesday night while walking on the tracks of a railway bridge here.
Bodies of victims, including two women and two children, were spotted lying besides the track by the driver of another train, they said.
“The bodies were strewn on the tracks and the driver of ‘Flying Rani’ informed the authorities,” GRP inspector H K Patel said.
The victims were yet to be identified, he said.
