Rizwanur committed suicide: CBI report
Kolkata, dhns:
Even though the sleuths of the central agency concluded Rizwanurs death as suicide, the CBI sought permission to file chargesheet against the then Deputy Commissioner Ajoy Kumar.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which investigated into the mysterious death of computer graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman, affirmed that he had committed suicide, recommending initiation of necessary action against senior Kolkata police officials including the then city police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee for ‘abetting’ suicide.

The voluminous CBI report was disclosed by Justice Dipankar Dutta of Calcutta High Court here on Thursday, prompting the government to state that it will comply with the court order.

Even though the sleuths of the central agency concluded Rizwanur’s death as suicide, the CBI sought permission to file chargesheet against the then Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Ajoy Kumar and two officers of his department alongwith Priyanka’s father Ashok Todi, uncle Pradip and maternal uncle Anil Saraogi and Mohiuddin alias Pappu for abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation and conspiracy.

However, CBI only recommended departmental action against the former police commissioner, who is presently the ADG (Telecom) with the West Bengal police and asked for major disciplinary action against the then DCP (headquarter) Gyanwant Singh and some officers of the Karaya police station.

“We have to see the report in detail and the High Court order that follows as there may be further hearing on the case,” state home secretary P R Roy said at the state secretariat, hours after the judge announced the report.

According to Mr Roy who promised to comply with the order, the court had made public a ‘part’ of the report.

Report denied

Justice Dutta, however, refused to oblige the police officers who prayed for supply of copy of the CBI report. Justice Dutta instead, sought details from the West Bengal government regarding action taken against the police officers. The matter would come up for hearing again on March 12 next by which the concerned parties have been asked to submit affidavits. The CBI had on January 8 submitted its report before Justice Dutta.

“We still suspect Rizwanur was murdered but since we’re yet to have a look at the CBI report, it’ll be premature to comment on the happenings now,” Rukbanur Rahman, Rizwanur’s elder brother, told the Deccan Herald here.
His mother Kishwar Jahan who demanded insaaf (justice) for her son, said that she would love to see the culprits brought to book whether it was a suicide or murder.
