Wraps, grills sans frills

After man discovered fire, the first thing he learnt was to grill his food. Despite the advance in technology, it still remains the best way to cook food and retain its original flavour.

There are multiple varieties of grills, with most falling into one of two categories: gas-fuelled and charcoal. There is a great debate over the merits of charcoal and gas as the cooking method between grillers.  Electric indoor grills have also recently become popular.

Grilling is a pervasive tradition in some countries. There are many cook-offs for steak grilling and barbecue (different styles) around the United States with serious cash prizes involved in most. Almost all competition grillers use charcoal, most often in large, custom designed brick or steel grills.

Winter is the perfect time to set-up a barbecue in the backyard with friends and family gathered around it. To capture this spirit, The Polo Club at The Oberoi is having a grills and wraps promotion from January 23 to 30 from 6.30 pm to 11 pm. There will be at site grill counter in the garden outside The Polo Club and the grilling is done in the age-old way.

There are interesting choices in grills ranging from Indian, Mediterranean, Mexican and fusion created by kitchen executive chef Udayshankar Shenoy.

Subzi Seekh, the vegetarian Indian grill is a tandoori spice marinated cottage cheese, pineapple and peppers. Scampi pulimunchi is grilled scampi with Mangalorean spices is a non-vegetarian grill.  Other non-veg grills include Mexican Chipotle which is spiced chicken drumstick with corn and pepper salad; Chermola rubbed fish; Barbecued tenderloin skewers with smoked pineapple salsa and cilantro crusted prawn with Thai raw papaya salad.

Wraps
A wrap is a variant of a taco or burrito which includes traditional sandwich fillings wrapped in a pita or soft flour tortilla, a lavash or other soft flatbread.

The wrap, also known as a `tortilla panacea’, has gained popularity as a low-carbohydrate alternative to sandwiches made with bread. Wraps have recently become popular in burger and sandwich restaurants. The tortilla is similar in size to those used for burritos. Sometimes the tortillas are flavoured, such as spinach-herb, chipotle, or tomato-basil.

Wraps at the promotion include Falafel in pita bread with labneh; spinach and feta sambusac; avocado and sun-dried tomato with rucola in corn and oregano bread; Mexican vegetable fajita with guacamole; Persian lamb kebab in pita bread with labneh and Rosemary roasted tenderloin with red peppers, rocket and boursin in olive bread.

To enliven the proceedings, Prasanth, the guitarist shall play popular numbers from 7.30 pm to 10 pm during the promotional period.
