The Intelligence Bureau is also well aware of the fact that LTTE sympathisers in the City have been reportedly contributing for the birthday of the Tamil Tiger chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. “The trend could still be on because there are innumerable supporters of the Tamil Eelam here, who support their cause,” charged a senior police officer.
In their map of a ‘Greater Tamil Nadu’, the Tigers had included Bangalore, KGF up to Chitoor district in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Kerala to the existing map of Tamil Nadu. They wanted to “liberate” these areas and add them to their map. They had already figured out the names of the regions as Malnadu, Arunadu, Erunainadu, Poolnadu, Kuddennadu, Punalnadu, Panninadu, Pandinadu, Vennadu in these regions in India and Eelam in North Sri Lanka. The map was seized in November 2002 by V S D’Souza, the then assistant commissioner of police, Frazer Town and his team when they caught former draughtsman of MICO, Vijaya Murthy and his accomplice near the Banaswadi Railway Station with a pipe bomb and country-made hand grenade.
Their arrest was vital and the City police, not only stumbled upon a huge cache of explosives and ammunition and classified information about their subversive activities, they also aborted plans to attack the Rajyotsava celebrations that year. The reason for the alleged mindless act was to “avenge” the Cauvery riots and attack on “fellow” Tamilians in the State.
The police searched Murthy’s house on Assey Road in Frazer Town and seized chemicals and ammunition. They raided other places in the City including that of D Kumar, a furniture manufacturer on Dickenson Road and found huge amount of ammunition and explosives, detonators, fuse wires and hand grenades in his warehouse.
“They confessed that they wanted to attack the Rajyotsava celebrations but couldn’t succeed as they didn’t get a car. We also arrested John Selvaraj, the supposed suicide bomber,” police said.
