It was a brave fight from A1 Team India’s Narain Karthikeyan, who finished 10th after starting from the 20th place on the starting grid, in the sprint race of the A1 Grand Prix at the Taupo Motorsports Park here on Sunday.
The 10th place finish fetched one point for Team India, whose total is 28 points.
In the feature race, Karthikeyan’s car spun out of the race. He had a good start and gained one place in the first corner, where several other cars spun off the track.
During that first fatal lap, Karthikeyan ran into trouble when Team Italy seemed to pull back. The two cars hit each other, Karthikeyan’s car spun out and it was also hit from behind by another team.
This rendered his car 'undriveable' as the rear upper right fish bone was destroyed – one bent and the other broken.
Meanwhile, New Zealand made A1GP history on Sunday, dominating the Taupo Sprint race from lights-to-flag to take its first-ever A1GP win at home.
Jonny Reid led from the pole position to take the chequered flag and score 15 crucial points. Germany's Vietoris, New Zealand are on top of the points table with 82 points, while Switzerland (80), France (80) and Germany (65) are in second, third and fourth places respectively.
In the feature race, Germany’s Vietoris secured his first A1GP race win in 1:10:40.
Germany were joined on the podium by Canada’s Robert Wickens in second place and pole-sitter France’s Loic Duval in third place. Local man Reid finished in fourth place.
