POLL ROLLS WILL BE READY IN A FEW DAYS: RAMASESHAN
Bangalore, DHNS:
All eyes are on the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka, with elections to State Assembly drawing nearer...

Will the elections be held as per the existing constituencies or the redrawn ones, as per the recommendations of Delimitation Commission, will be adopted? This is the question in everybody’s mind of late.

Deccan Herald spoke to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R Ramsheshan in this regard.

DH: Will the coming elections be held as per the Delimitation Commission’s recommendations?

CEO: I have no clue about it. In fact, I learnt about it only through the media. It is Central Election Commission (CEC) which will take the decision.

Is the election commission in State prepared to hold the polls according to redrawn constituencies?
CEO: I don’t want to comment about it.

What was the main agenda of the two day meeting held on January 2 and 3?

CEO: It was a routine meeting. The CEC wanted to assess the preparedness to hold elections. Several issues related to election process were discussed in the meeting chaired by Deputy Election Commissioner R Battacharya.

Is the electoral roll ready in the State?

CEO: We are in the process of doing it. It will be completed in a few day’s time.

It is alleged that the voters’ list has a lot of anomalies. What are the steps taken to rectify them?

CEO: I do not want to say anything about it. I would only say that we are on the job. Door-to-door survey is on for verification.

Are you going to extend the date for revision of voters’ list?

CEO: It has to be decided by CEC.

While the election commission's committment to review the voter's list is commendable the process it adopts to achieve the same is far from satisfactory and depends heavily on a sluggish administration.
Getting enlisted into the voters' list has to be further simplified.
Is there a way to approach the commission voluntarily to register oneself by providing valid documents instead of waiting for the door to door survey which may be an incomplete exercise.
Let the voting be made hasslefree.
