Communism: A failed god?
Sir,
Apropos the news report Socialism not possible now: Basu (DH, Jan 6), though belated Jyoti Basu has realised the follies of the communist doctrine which blindly opposed capitalism for decades. The comrades with their “straight-jacketed” Marxist blinkers, dogmatically denied capitalism and stunted the industrial growth in their communist bastions.
Their pet theme communism failed long back but the comrades conjured-up “socialist” catch-phrase thriving on poverty only to hood-wink the hapless electorate. Though capitalism is despised and deprecated by many, the world progressed with it leaving the “non-believers” and non-practitioners ie. the communists, in doldrums.
It is time the comrades gave-up their idiosyncrasy, jettisoned their jaded fellow-travellers, allowed the corporate houses to set-up industries sans labour problems. Otherwise the educated unemployed will join and swell their cadre-ranks shouting slogans and carrying guns.

Socialism
Sir,
Veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu is right. Socialism does not allow practical solutions to the needs of the people. It has miserably failed in Europe and other countries. Human nature does not motivate people to practice socialism.
Socialism is an alien concept not acceptable to Indian way of governance and of making a living. Therefore, the Indian communist parties should stop misleading their supporters.

Caste certificates
Sir,
Acquiring false SC/ST certificates is a “status” symbol these days. It acts as a “magic-wand” that opens the doors of prosperity. That is what has happened in the case of 44 students who got admission to MBA courses with fake certificates (DH, Jan 6) The Syndicate issuing notice to colleges concerned is unwarranted as they have not abetted with the issuance of certificates. It is the competent officers or authorities who have certified the applications. They have to be held responsible and criminal cases need to be filed.

Wrong umpiring
Sir,
The India v/s Australia cricket series has brought out the issue of mindless umpiring to the fore. The umpires without any reason or any semblance of reason are unable to judge the matches and their decisions have been going more often against India than against the Australians. It is surprising that BCCI has turned a deaf ear on the issue and to us cricket lovers, our interest in the series will continue to wane as long as umpires play an active role in deciding the outcome of matches.

School violence
Sir,
Violence among children has started to terrorise the society. Children become more violent when their expression is stifled. One can only be a successful custodian of a child if he learns how to respond to child’s feelings and expressions. These incidents raise a question that concerns all of us: if the parents are not as responsible as they should be, are the children as innocent and ignorant as we think?

Gowda’s gimmicks
Sir,
H D Deve Gowda, the former Prime Minister, much to the relief of one and all, has taken a wise decision not to align with either the Congress or the BJP in the ensuing assembly election in Karnataka. One wishfully hopes he does not change his stance in this as he often does. His decision will further dissipate the party that it will shortly sublimate and vaporise into non-existence.
