What better way to experience a slice of Bengal than a shopping spree? The Bengalee Association is playing host to an exhibition which has a wide display of beautiful handcrafted garments and accessories, that are folksy, yet trendy.
There are stalls showcasing sarees in various categories—designer, handblock cotton, batik silk, zardosi, silk sarees with beats, tussars, printed sarees, cottons with Kashmiri work and hand embroidered sarees with kanta work, adi work, batik, etc.
Sharmista, who has a stall for costume jewellery, showed off exquisite pieces including earrings, neck pieces, bracelets and anklets. There was a stall for short kurtis for women and skirts which are referred to as ‘mekala’ (they are similar to the ones made in Assam) and metal dokra pieces. There’s one stall for menswear selling long kurtas.
The other section includes a variety of bedsheets, bedcovers, dry flowers and footwear for women. The jute footwear sets are mainly hand embroderied and can be used in any season for any occasion.
Shibani Banerjee, one of the organisers, said, “We are having this kind of exhibition for the first time here. If we receive a good response, we would like to have similar exhibitions in the future. The materials are all traditional and handmade.”
The prices really suit any pocket and range from Rs 180 to Rs 3,000 for clothes and Rs 45 to Rs 250 for jewellery. The exhibition is on at the Bengalee Association, Assaye Road, Ulsoor (near Lakeside Hospital), till July 12.
