She came, she saw, she conquered. The entire media fraternity wouldn’t stop clicking away as Kareena Kapoor walked in like a greek goddess in her olive green dress and Shobha Asar jewellery melting in to her flawless skin. In Oberoi to launch Shobha Asar, the design house from Mumbai, which held an exclusive exhibition of jewellery of different genres, a mix of diamonds and rubies and several other stones.
Not batting an eyelid, Kareena talked a lot. About her two passions, Aha! well, acting and jewellery! She says, “I like to wear Shobha Asar because it has the right amount of class. But isn’t she more often seen in Western outfits? So where does the jewellery fit in? Well, she has the answer all ready. “You’re right, I do wear Western clothes more often but the best thing about this jewellery is that it goes with all outfits, Indian or Western. You can see how well it goes with my dress.”
All about Bollywood
On the huge success of Jab We Met, she says, “it was the story of two individuals, one outgoing and the other subtle. It is that unusual combination that worked.”
And she surely is elated by its success. But one that didn’t work in real life. Bollywood has a huge dearth of good story-tellers and isn’t that shortage is hidden in all the glitz and glamour. Kareena disagrees, “No we do have great story-tellers and great films. And I do enjoy doing the glamour films.”
“But as you said,” she continues “I get more satisfaction doing a film like Jab We Met, Omkaara and Chameli. And you remind her about the unforgettable scene where she is being strangled to death even as she struggles for breath and the effort that went into the shoot, a visibly pleased Kareena says the entire credit goes to Vishaal, “who literally guided me throughout the making of the film. And I’ve always loved Desdemona. I was living the character.”
Asked to croon a few lines of Stevie Wonder’s “I just called to say....” which she does in Omkaara where she struggles to pronounce ‘Bottom of my heart’ and goes on singing ‘Bottttom’, she exclaims, “O God wherever I go, they always remind me of this.” When told that with the money that goes into the making of a Bollywood’s star’s outfit could feed at least half of Maharashtra,” she laughs. About her future plans, she has a Yash Raj productions movie coming up. “And I would also be working in my home production,” she adds.
Being a celebrity
On a more personal level, she says “I am not a calculative person. I say what comes to my mind and I live the way my heart tells me to.”
Doesn’t all this media glare disturb you? Don’t you want to be a nobody and shop on Linking Road? She says, “No, I enjoy being a celebrity. I enjoy the attention.” But when her personal life is put on a scanner and her cinema goes to the background, how does she feel. “It’s all part of being a celebrity. One has to accept it.”
And how does she tackle rough times as a celebrity? There was a certain glint of sadness in her eyes when she says “I am spiritual person. I believe in God and I know he will provide me the best.”
