Parnika, student: According to me, it’s a cowardly act. ALl of us face similar problems and pressures a lot of times. But suicide is no answer to any of those problems. This phenomenon is more visible among the older students in higher classes. But peer pressure, though an important factor, is not solely responsible. One shouldn’t run away from life. You might not realize how much you are going to be missing out on. School is a lot of fun.
Sudhan, intern, KIMS: Suicides are definitely on the rise off late and more so among medical students. According to me, it’s mostly due to the syllabus which is heavy and exhausting for a student. The ever increasing fee structure is also to blame. So a viable solution would be to bring about changes in the fee structure as well as the syllabus. Suicides resulting from personal reasons occur mostly in the urban areas. Complicated lifestyles are also to blame.
Srilatha, central government employee: Peer pressure is the main cause. Unfortunately, these days it is parents who seem to be in the race. Parents must guide their children instead of pressurising them. Nowadays unhealthy competition seems is prevalent. Children are expected to perform well. Even when they are employed, not only are they expected to excel in their work but also bring home a good amount at the end of the month.
T V Rajgopal, employee, Vijay Constructions: This is a worrisome trend. Today there’s so much stress on getting good marks in schools and colleges. Children who get low marks are subjected to humiliation. Suicides occur mainly due competition and peer pressure. It is not a good thing because families too suffer a lot. I have undergone this trauma myself as I have suffered a personal loss due to suicide. So I know how it feels.
