Vibrant and enthusiastic, RJ Pavithra hosts ‘City Spice’ on Radio City, 91.1 FM. “Its a one stop shop for all things womanly,” she declares. Targeted at homemakers in the age group of 25-35 years, the show deals with a variety of issues ranging from home, health, cuisine, fashion and relationships.
Peppered with innovative competitions, the show underscores the station’s catchy signature tune of “Whatte Fun”. Woman centric it is, but what its not is an austere forum for pedantic debate on contentious issues involving the fairer sex. This does not mean that serious issues are swept under the carpet; they only acquire an aspect of instantaneous connectivity with the audience. Its not just the women who are hooked on to City Spice.
Men tune in too, mostly for the plethora of Bollywood music that Pavithra plays. Why the unusual name? “The show is about spicing up the homemaker’s life. It brings out facets of their personality that may go unnoticed in their daily routine,” she says.
What she cherishes most about her job is the sense of kinship that she has developed with her audience. “I get callers from places like Mysore and Mandya. Its such a good feeling to know that you have touched their lives in some way,” she smiles. Great grand-daughter of AIR pioneer M V Gopalaswamy, Pavithra is no stranger to the profession. “Music has always been my passion and I’ve literally grown up with the radio. I’ve always known that this is what I want to do”, she confesses.
For ‘spicy’ afternoons with Pavithra, tune into City Spice on Radio City from Monday to Saturday between 11 am. and 2 pm.
