Ashok, NRI: Senior players must be asked to rest if they are not performing well. I agree with what Dilip Vengsarkar said. Most players are here for money, with little interest in the game. I believe it is better for them to play test cricket rather than one-day internationals. Preferences must be based on performance only. The Australian team, in that aspect, is extremely professional. Apart from a full-fledged team, they have extra players who are just as good. The Indian team should also be follow a similar pattern where, batsmen and bowlers must specialise in their area. Each of them must be given specific positions and must excel at that.
Jagadish, court service: I think young players in the team must be given more of an opportunity. The performance of senior players such as Sachin, Saurav and Dravid are not upto the mark. The recent Twenty20 proved the power of having a young team. Selection must be based on the performance of every player and not on seniority. Agree that seniors players have experience, but their performance is only getting worse by the day. Sportspeople are public figures and must be open to criticism. I don’t think this kind of criticism must affect players, instead they must be able to take it in the right spirit.
Amit, dentist: I am against the option of asking senior players to rest. If there are only youngsters, who will lead the team? Experience does matter and a team without senior players, who have with them loads of experience, will not work well. According to me, Vengsarkar’s remark was bad but I don’t think senior players will be affected by such remarks. The media and the public should take up the matter seriously. Certainly youngsters must be given a chance, but they can’t replace players with experience. Young players must work under the guidance of senior players.
Prasanna, private firm employee: I think the Indian cricket team must maintain a balance between youngsters and senior players. Senior players who seem to be taking their position for granted. Any players’ position in the team must be performance-based unlike the Indian team where seniors are given a place based on their experiences. But they seem to be proving time and again that experience has nothing to do with performance. According to me, Rahul Dravid must be asked to stop playing. Youngsters like Suresh Raina and Kaif, if given the opportunity, will prove to be good to the team.
