Congress welcomes petrol price cut, BJP wants rollback

New Delhi, June 2,2012 (IANS)

The Congress welcomed the Rs.2 per litre cut in petrol prices announced by oil companies Saturday but denied it was a rollback, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected the move and demanded a complete withdrawal of the Rs.6.28 per litre hike announced May 23.

"It is a positive step but not a rollback. The oil companies have taken a decision. The government has no control as the fuel is de-regulated," Minister of State for Petroleum R.P.N. Singh told Times Now news channel.

He said the decision has been taken by the oil companies to pass on the benefit of fall in the international price of crude oil to the consumers.

The BJP rejected the move. "Partial rollback in petrol price hike is not acceptable to us. There is something more to it than meets the eye," BJP Spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman told Times Now channel.

The Congress's ally DMK said the petrol price should further come down. "It is a small relief.

The burden on the common man is still high. We will be happy if petrol prices further come down," DMK leader T.K.S. Elangovan told Times Now channel.
