Bengaluru theatres struggle after note ban

Last Updated 26 November 2016, 15:47 IST

The demonetisation move has affected single screen theatres in Bengaluru. Even after two weeks of the note ban, there is no sign of business picking up.

The number of tickets sold online by the single screen theatres is low. They are mostly dependent on patrons who turn up at the theatre and then buy tickets with cash.

These theatres are hit by the shortage of 100 rupee notes which is also the average price of their tickets. After the central government withdrew higher denomination currency, the demand for Rs 100  shot up making it scarce.

Theatre managers say very few customers come with Rs 100. There is not enough change with them to accept the new Rs 2,000 notes. After demonetisation, sale of tickets have come down drastically in these theatres.

Unsure of doing business, many big budget movies have put off release dates forcing theatres to run one month films. Reports say demonetisation has affected shooting of films as well. When the DH team visited these theatres on a  Friday, the busiest day of the week for them, they all wore a deserted look.
