Memories of a midnight knock

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Emergency, DH spoke to a few residents of Bengaluru, who had lived through the tumultuous times.  
 

The conversation about Emergency is usually coloured by what the political classes and the institutions of the country, including the media went through. 

It was indeed a bad time that saw the suspension of the Indian constitution, along with the fundamental rights, by a Prime Minister, who was on her back foot. 

Judiciary caved in, media was clamped and opposition was sent to prison. Any sign of dissent was seen as treason. 

But at the popular level, people seem to have mixed emotions about the infamous midnight knock. While many condemn, some even look back nostalgically. 

Here is what we found out.
