Virtual reality to empower women

Last Updated 31 July 2015, 15:33 IST

Amnesty International India in association with Bengaluru city police have launched a campaign called ‘Bengaluru, Get Ready to Report’. The initiative aims to encourage more women to approach police when they face any kind of sexual harassment.

According to a survey report,  a mere 30 percent of women tell someone about having experienced sexual violence, while only 1 percent report it to the police. One of main reasons for this disparity is most of the victims are ingnorant of their legal rights.

In order to bridge the gap, Amnesty is training women in filing an FIR with the help of  virtual equipment which  gives simulated experience of being inside a police station. The virtual reality experiance is created through a Google cardboard and a mobile app. When one puts on the head gear,  the person would be taken through the procedure of filing an FIR in clockwise direction.

Amnesty believes that when victims are aware of the procedure and the law, they will be more confident and informative while filing an FIR, which in turn helps authorities in the investigation.
