Ganesha idols, not eco-friendly still

Last Updated 17 September 2016, 16:12 IST

Thousands of devotees brought their Ganesha idols to Halasuru Lake on Thursday, the last day for immersion ceremony.

BBMP officials had set up a separate pond to sink the idols. There were cranes to lift and sink large idols. The small idols were immersed by the workers hired by BBMP officials.

The colourful and Plaster of Paris idols pose a major problem for the lake every year during immersion. These come with toxic colours and are made of non-biodegradable materials, which prove deadly to the water body.

The officials had put up a board outside the lake banning PoP idols. But this was a ban observed more in principle than practice. The immersion pond was clogged with POP idols.

Officials say POP idols do not dissolve. They are scooped up after immersion ceremony and sent to a dumping ground in Yelahanka. However, there is also a small section of devotees, who buy only colourless clay Ganeshas due to their concern for environment.
