Bangaloreans are in for a visual treat at the ‘39th Annual Cake Show’ which began on Friday. Organised by Nilgiris, the exhibition is being held at St Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds and has several attractions, with the main ones being the life-size statue of the recently-retired cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and a replica of the Charminar of Hyderabad which measures 22 feet by 22 feet by 18 feet. Five tonnes of sugar, several kilos of cream and hundreds of eggs have been used for the creations.

Not to be missed are the shoe shop, an Indian bride, a water slide, a replica of the Burj Al Dubai, a wedding cake with around 2000 roses adorning it, a Rapunzel castle and several other enormous cakes. 40 people have worked hard on these intricate models over the last 60 days.

“There are many technicalities and a lot of co-ordination is involved. Since they are all made of sugar, they are very delicate. Right from architectural design to bringing it to the stage, it’s been a journey involving a lot of effort,” said Babu, a member of the assembling team who has been associated with the ‘Cake Show’ for the last 20 years. He added, “We ensure that we use top quality ingredients, be it the sugar or colouring agents.” The cakes will be donated to orphanages after the show. Lakshman Gandhi, a decorator who was seen doing last minute touch-up to the six feet by four feet water slide, said, “We are looking forward to a lot of children visiting our stall.”
In the previous years, the highlights have been a replica of the Taj Mahal, A Pentagon of Harmony, the Bangalore and Mysore Palaces and the Buckingham Palace among a host of other creations. While the number of visitors at the ‘Cake Show’ was between 45,000 to 50,000 last year, the organisers are targetting almost double the number this year. “In fact, the ‘Cake Show’ has a fan club with a regular stream of visitors. We are hoping that we receive at least 80,000 to 90,000 visitors this year. Actually, we are confident that we will be able to reach the target,” said Gautam Agarwal, the director of National Consumer Fair, the organisers of the show.

Pointing out that creating the life-size figure of Sachin was a last-minute decision, Gautam added, “Although, it was decided a bit late in the day, we were able to do it. We felt this is a good way to pay a tribute to the Master Blaster. Every year, we ensure that we capture the highlight of the year. We enjoy doing something different.” The ‘Cake Show’ will go on till December 29 at St Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds.
