Soon, new Rs 100 note in lavender

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue new Rs 100 currency notes with a slice of Gujarat on them. The new denomination will have the motif of “Rani Ki Kav” on the reverse, depicting the country's cultural heritage.

An intricately constructed step-well in Gujarat, Rani Ki Kav was added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites in 2014 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government came to power at the Centre.

Later, it was also promoted on television by actor Amitabh Bachchan in the Gujarat Tourism’s ‘Khushboo Gujarat ki’ campaign.

The new series notes will have a lavender base and other colours to go with it. They will be a bit smaller than the older bills. The new notes will come with a windowed security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and RBI in colour shift, implying the colour of the thread will change from green to blue when the note is tilted. The old notes will continue to be a legal tender.

For the visually-impaired, the new currency notes will have raised printing of Mahatma Gandhi portrait, Ashoka Pillar emblem, raised triangular identification mark with micro-text 100, four angular bleed lines on both the right and left sides on the front of the notes.

The new notes will have a see-through register with denominational numeral 100 along with latent image with denominational numeral 100 in Devnagari script. It will have a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the Centre.

The notes will bear the Guarantee Clause, RBI governor’s signature with a promise clause and RBI emblem towards the right of the Mahatma Gandhi portrait. It will also have the Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right. The notes are expected to be issued by next month.
