Samsung brings ISOCELL GN2 50MP camera with better autofocus for mobiles

Samsung cameras in Xiaomi and other branded phones. Now, the South Korean consumer electronics major has announced a new line of GN2 mobile camera series.

“ISOCELL image sensors and its technologies have made vast improvements to deliver the quality and performance one would expect from top-tier prograde cameras. Our new ISOCELL GN2 features Dual Pixel Pro, an innovative all-direction auto-focusing solution that elevates the agility to capture moments as they unfold. Adding on Smart ISO Pro and a variety of advanced pixel technologies, pictures from GN2 are more true-to-life than ever," said Duckhyun Chang, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics.

The new Samsung ISOCELL GN2 houses a new 50-megapixel (MP) image sensor with large 1.4-micrometer (μm)-sized pixels. It comes with major upgrades over the predecessor (ISOCELL GN1) and offers up to 100MP imaging, improved auto-focusing through Dual Pixel Pro technology, powerful staggered HDR (High Dynamic Range), and vivid results through Smart ISO Pro in all types of lighting environment.

In low-lit conditions such as indoors, the sensor is capable of simulating a larger 2.8μm-pixel with four-pixel-binning technology to absorb more light to deliver brighter and sharper images.

It should be noted that the new Samsung GN2 series is the first-ever camera sensor to boast Dual Pixel Pro. It is said to be the most advanced phase-detection auto-focus solution yet. It is capable of all-direction focusing by splitting the pixels not only vertically, as with Dual Pixel, but also diagonally.

Under normal conditions such as sunsets or indoors with daylight coming through a window, the GN2 is capable of increasing dynamic range with a staggered-HDR feature, a time-multiplexed HDR technology that uses rolling shutters over the same pixel arrays to capture multiple frames in short, middle, and long exposures, the company said.

Also, Samsung GN2 supports full-HD videos at 480 frames-per-second (fps) and 4K at 120fps, enabling wider possibilities for mobile video-shooting.

The company has confirmed that the GN2 sensor is already under mass production, but there is no official word, which mobile brands will be featuring it in their devices.
