100 more junctions to get adaptive traffic signals

Last Updated 15 October 2018, 10:14 IST

Another hundred intersections in Bengaluru will get adaptive signals that will check the traffic flow in real time and adjust the red or green lights accordingly without any manual intervention.

Vehicle Actuated Signals, or adaptive signals, will be equipped with cameras that will capture the traffic density at the intersection and transmit the data to sensor lights. The cameras will count the number of vehicles on each road and help reduce/increase the duration of the traffic lights accordingly.

While the traffic police will be spared the hassle of manually changing the signals, commuters could potentially benefit from reduced wait time, according to R Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The signals will be installed by Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) in six months. This will be the second phase of the project to upgrade traffic signals under the Bangalore Traffic Improvement Project or B-TRAC. In July 2017, adaptive signals were installed at 35 intersections, mostly on the outskirts. The traffic police plan to instal adaptive signals at all the 363 traffic junctions in the city.
