A three-year-old girl found abandoned behind a church in Northeast Bengaluru's Amruthahalli was sexually assaulted, doctors who examined her at a government hospital have concluded.

The Amruthahalli police, who initially took up a case of abandonment of child, later invoked the IPC section pertaining to rape and several sections under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The police had earlier invoked IPC Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years by a parent or person having taken care of it) and booked the parents.

Passersby had found the girl abandoned behind Bethel AG Church in Chiranjeevi Layout, Hebbal Kempapura, around 6.30 am on May 31. They called the police control room, which alerted the Amruthahalli police. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) also joined the probe. The girl was in a shock and wasn't talking much. She could not even name her parents.

CWC members took the child to the Balakiyara Balamandira on Hosur Road the same evening as her parents could not be traced. On June 2, when the child underwent a medical examination at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, doctors found she had been sexually assaulted, said Kala Krishnaswamy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Northeast.

The DCP added they were trying to trace the girl's parents, besides looking for the man who sexually assaulted her.
