Winning the best student project prize at the Aero India 2019 airshow, the Sir M Visveswaraya Institute of Technology team stood out for their amphibious drone, Gannet. The drone, developed inhouse, works both underwater and up in the air.

The team of Shiv Varun Singh Rajput, D Revant and Aman Sinha won the coveted prize that carried a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh.

“The Gannet project has been in incubation period at IIT Bombay SINE. We want to productionise the drone in the next four months. It can be used for multiple military and civilian applications,” explained Rajput.

Weighing 2.6 kg, the Gannet has an endurance of about 20 minute in the air and four to five hours underwater. “This device can replace divers to understand what goes underwater in projects such as the Clean Ganga programme and cage cultivation in fisheries.”
