After the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) proposal to hike property taxes, now, it is the BWSSB which is planning to hike the water tariff in the city.

A steep increase in water tariff is on the cards this year, as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is planning to send a proposal to the state government in this regard.

With rumours abound the BWSSB is planning to hike the water tariff by 30-35% in the city, DH spoke to the BWSSB chairman.

“We are planning to send the proposal to the state government by the end of January. We are still finalising the hike percentage,” Tushar Girinath, chairman, BWSSB told DH.

A senior official from the water board, meanwhile, said that the expenses have been mounting of late, and it is critical to increase the water tariff. “We have been paying for the re-laying of roads, and a lot of money is being spent to get water connection to the 110 villages. It is necessary to boost our funds,” he said.

The last time the board hiked the tariff was in 2014, and in 2005 before that. While there was a gap of 9 years between 2005 and 2014, this time, a proposal has been made within four years. The BWSSB makes Rs 1,200 crore from water bills every year.
