Crackdown on waste, debris in vacant plots

Last Updated 19 May 2019, 20:01 IST

If you own a vacant plot in the city and think you can trash it with whatever, you are wrong. From now on, one cannot have waste, debris or even vegetation in vacant land. If you do, be ready to pay a heavy penalty.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a circular to its assistant executive engineers (AEEs) of Solid Waste Management (SWM) at the ward level, directing them to identify vacant sites that have waste, debris and vegetation and issue notice to the owners.

The AEEs are told to issue notices to such lands giving 15 days to clear waste, debris and vegetation, and impose hefty fines in case the notices go ignored. The circular has been issued as part of implementing SWM Rules 2016, that recommend filing a police complaint and pursuing a lawsuit against the concerned landowner.

“The circular has been issued and landowners have only 15 days to clear the waste, debris and vegetation from their vacant sites. Or else, a heavy fine will be levied,” D Randeep, additional commissioner, SWM, BBMP, told DH.

Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner, SWM said: “Along with clearing waste, debris and vegetation, the landowner will have to ensure the site is fenced and put up signage asking not to dump waste and debris. Height of the site should not exceed permissible limits. If fencing and any material dumped inside the site affects vehicular movement on the road, action will be taken,” he said.
