Garden-themed to reflect Bengaluru’s once cherished green identity, the second terminal (T2) of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will boost its capacity by 25 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA). The terminal will be at the core of KIA’s massive Rs 13,000 crore expansion plan.
At over 2.55 lakh sq metres, the first phase of T2 will be massive in scale with 22 Code C gates, 15 bus gates, 17 security check lanes and 95 check-in solutions. But what will stand out is its ‘Terminal in a garden’ concept, with lush greenery within and outside.
The two-level terminal will house all departure points on the first floor and the arrivals on the ground floor. A multi-modal transport hub, which will eventually include a Metro station, a multi-level car parking area and a lagoon for water recycling are part of the T2 design.
The design, unveiled on Thursday by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) Chief Executive Officer, Hari Marar, incorporates interiors with bamboo cladding and near-transparent columns.
The departure immigration will feature 30 conventional and 10 e-gates, while the arrival immigration will house 34 conventional, six e-gates and 20 visa-on-arrival points. The customs section will incorporate nine hand baggage screening points.
The gate lounge will have seating for 5,932 passengers. Nine baggage claim devices are also part of the T2 design.
The entire terminal roof will be covered with solar, photovoltaic panels to enhance the current use of renewable energy beyond 70%. However, for other power-intensive sections, a 66 KV substation will be set up by July 2019.
All stormwater and water discharge, including grey and black water, will be treated onsite. A 3 Million Litres Daily (MLD) sewage treatment plant will be set up by mid-2019. “Currently, BIAL buys 0.8 MLD of secondary treatment water from the BWSSB for landscaping,” informed Marar.
To build the garden atmosphere, an exclusive nursery has been planned for T2 on a 30-35 acre plot. All trees and plants used in landscaping will be relocated to this nursery, to be replanted later.
T1 upgrade
To upgrade the capacity of the existing terminal and airfield, the number of aircraft parking slots will be enhanced from 85 to 106 by April 1, 2019.
Sixteen self bag-drop units have already been added for departing passengers, reducing the check-in time to 45 seconds. By April 1, all lines will be brought under the smart security lane system.
