A weekend trip ended in a tragedy for a group of youth when one of them drowned in the Averahalli Lake in Ramanagaram on Saturday evening.

The deceased, 24-year-old Chetan Kumar, was an engineering student from Whitefield. He, along with nine of his friends, had left the city for an outing on Saturday. He drowned in the lake in the evening.

According to the Ramanagaram Rural police, the youth stayed in a resort near the Campfire Circle. The group headed to a pond outside the resort and moved near the Averahalli Lake which was full of silt.

Around 5 pm, Kumar entered the waterbody but got stuck in the silt. He didn’t know how to swim and drowned.

His friends tried to rescue him but failed as it was dark by then and visibility was low.

They then informed the resort management which alerted the police as well as the fire and emergency services personnel.

The rescue team rushed to the spot and fished the body out. After the post-mortem, the body has been handed over to his family.

Police have registered a case against the management of the resort under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code for negligence and failing to take care of its guests.
