Last Updated 14 November 2018, 20:39 IST

A day Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and an activist engaged in a spat over the eviction of street vendors from Madiwala, more netizens joined the debate on Wednesday.

The deliberation was is it important to make way for pedestrians on encroached footpaths or to look at the livelihood of street vendors before evicting them.

It all started with Kiran tweeting on Tuesday: “Excellent work but please ensure encroachers don’t reappear,” to which Vinay Sreenivasa, activist and a representative from Bengaluru District Street Vendor’s Organisation had hit back by tweeting: “Pls learn the law Madam. Street Vending is legal. It's protected by the Street Vendors Act. Stop criminalising the poor.”

More netizens joined in to express their opinions.

A twitter handle by the name Incredible Indian mentioned: “Hello Mr Vinay not sure if you are a Bengalurean and travel on that route every day. The double road from Madiwala PS to Krupanidhi College is completely taken over by these vendors choking traffic. @BBMPCOMM should provide space to these folks next to silk board flyover.”

For which, Vinay had responded by tweeting: “Hello. I am a Banglurean. Ille huttiddu, ille beladiddu. (I am born and brought up here) I am not denying that there might have been no issues. But there is a systemic way to address it. Not unilateral evictions. Notice should be given, alternate place has to be chosen etc. See my other tweets for details”

Vinay further tweeted to Kiran about street vendor laws: “See sec 3(3) of the act - (3) No street vendor shall be evicted or, as the case may be, relocated till the survey specified under sub-section (1) has been completed and the certificate of vending is issued.”

Responding to this, Nitin Sheshadri, president of Koramangala 3rd block Resident Welfare Association tweeted, “I will counter with Section 3(2) of the Act which restricts street vendors to 2.5 % of ward population. There were almost 2000 people employed by the shops. Largest shops had 3 to 4 attendants. If a large shop with attendants is a "street vendor" then I am the Emperor of Japan.”

Even Ashwath Narayan, MLA of Malleshwaram, tweeted, “While I'm all for the hard working street vendors earning their livelihood, I also agree with @kiranshaw that hawking should be done in designated zones. @BBMPCOMM needs to get its act together and put an end to all of this under the guidance of the existing laws.”
