Police rescue cabbie who tried to end life

A 26-year-old cab driver slashed his wrist with a glass piece to dodge arrest by a police team that surrounded him.

The police wanted to arrest him regarding the theft of a passenger’s belongings in his cab at Hebbagodi recently. The police rushed the driver, Naveen Kumar, from Hassan to a hospital and filed an attempt to suicide case on him.

A senior police official said Pragya Bansal had hired Kumar’s cab from Kempegowda International Airport to her residence in Hebbagodi. The passenger realized that she had left her laptop and other valuables in Kumar’s cab. When she called, the driver gave excuses and did not return the belongings.

After her attempts to get the belongings from Kumar went in vain, Pragya filed a complaint with the Hebbagodi police. Pragya had left a laptop, Rs 1.4 lakh in cash, two gold chains weighing 40 and 50 grams, a 50-gram pendant and a diamond ring.

Police intercepted Kumar’s car at the Veerasandra Gate near Biocon in Electronic City to arrest him. Kumar had locked the car doors and tried to kill himself by slashing his wrist with the broken glass. He is said to be out of danger at the hospital. Soon after his arrest, police learnt that Kumar was a driver for Goibibo.
