Gandhi Jayanti: Police shut KFC outlet for serving meat

The Basavanagudi police officials on Tuesday closed down a KFC outlet at Basavanagudi North Road for serving non-vegetarian food on Gandhi Jayanti.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had issued a circular on Monday directing “all meat shops in the city should be closed and the selling of all kind of meat is prohibited on Gandhi Jayanti.”

Basavanagudi police said the police control room received a complaint that the outlet was serving non-vegetarian food despite the directive. By the time the Hoysala patrol staff reached the spot they had closed the store. The staff claimed that they did not serve non-veg to their customers.

A police official said it is understood that cutting animals and even selling non-vegetarian food is not allowed on Gandhi Jayanti. It was directed to all the restaurants, hotels and other establishments not to serve meat on October 2. No complaint has been registered in this regard.

A BBMP official said, “On October 2 serving non-vegetarian food is prohibited and if anyone is doing that police can close the shop.”

Despite several attempts to reach out to the KFC spokesperson, there was no response.
