Last Updated 12 January 2019, 20:46 IST

A private school has adopted a government school in the city in an attempt to support disadvantaged pupils.

The Vidyashilp Academy - a private school in Yelahanka - is conducting their 'education development programme' at the Byatarayanapura government school.

"Earlier, it was difficult to complete a full sentence, but, after the spoken English and reading classes, I am able to talk fluently. I am thinking of becoming a teacher," says one of the 250 students benefiting from Vidyashilp Academy's ongoing programme.

In time, the academy will introduce co-curricular activities in the govt school's curriculum. Monitoring the quality of teaching, attendance, parent satisfaction and ensuring tangible improvement in the students' academic scores are on the cards as well.

”Many govt schools struggle with inadequate infrastructure, poor sanitation, lack of adequate learning practice and weak academic output. The Byatarayanapura government school is no exception; it is our duty to step in. In partnership with the school principal, Vani Gandhi, we aim to meet these needs," Kiran Pai, director of Vidyashilp Academy told DH.

The Byatarayanapura school, the foundation for which was laid over 70 years ago, conducts classes till the primary level at the moment.

The adoption programme envisages requisite infrastructure to enhance learning spaces like renovating the school playground, upkeep of essentials in the classrooms, painting and waterproofing of the classroom walls, assistance in upgrading the library, setting up an early science lab, computer lab and stores.
