Broken bus adds to traffic chaos on Hebbal flyover

Last Updated 26 June 2018, 19:41 IST

It was a chaotic Tuesday morning for commuters on the Hebbal Flyover, who were stuck in a jam extending to a couple of kilometres. All thanks to a bus that broke down on the busy airport road.

On Tuesday morning, the traffic movement from Hebbal towards the city was disrupted for over an hour due to the break down of the bus. The traffic pile-up extended up to Hebbal and the R T Nagar traffic police rushed to the spot to tow away the bus using a crane.

The police borrowed the crane engaged in the flyover widening work in RT Nagar.

The infamous traffic jam on the stretch has worsened due to BDA's road widening work recently. Vehicles breaking down on this particular road creates additional problems.

"The traffic congestion has increased after the BDA began the work—an eight-lane road from the airport. To add to the woes, vehicles break down on this stretch constantly," said a commuter.

Quick measures, not long-term

"Even if a single lane is affected or blocked, the traffic piles up. And we take quick measures to clear it, like this time we roped in the crane to immediately move the bus," a traffic police official said.

A senior engineer working on the project said that the traffic congestion is due to three road lanes coming from KR Puram, Tumakuru and Airport merging at Hebbal and only the ongoing project will ease the traffic in that particular junction. "But in the long run, we need to find a more integrated long-term solution to solve the traffic congestion problem," he added.
