Youth attempts suicide at National College Metro

A 25-year-old man jumped in front of a train in an attempt to commit suicide at the National College metro station on Friday.

The victim, identified as Venu, sustained head injuries and was fortunate that the train did not run over him. He works as a tailor in Basavanagudi and the reason for his suicide attempt is yet to be ascertained by the police as he is unable to speak and is undergoing treatment at the NIMHANS.

According to police, the incident happened around 11.20 am when Venu jumped in front of a 3-compartment train which was coming from Lalbagh, headed towards Majestic. While the train was slowing down to stop, Venu jumped on the tracks in front of the train. He was lucky that within two to three seconds of his fall, the train came to halt and the alert metro staff at the station tripped the power supply and informed the police.

The power supply lines running on two sides of the tracks is 750 volts, a senior police officer said. V V Puram police rushed to the spot and with the help of a few metro staff, physically pushed the train back to take out Venu who was stuck between the tracks and the first wheels.

He sustained head injuries and was unconscious when the police and metro staff rescued him. An ambulance was called and Venu was shifted to NIMHANS where the doctors performed a CT scan and ruled him out of danger. The police have informed Venu's parents about the incident and the police are yet to take up a case. Metro services were disrupted for about 30 minutes on the entire Green line and services were resumed later.
