'Drishyam 2' movie review: A thrilling, befitting sequel

'Drishyam 2' quashes the notion that sequels lack the magic of the originals.

The story is set six years after the pulsating end to a gripping thriller. Georgekutty (Mohanlal), along with his cable TV channel business, now owns a theatre and is pursuing his passion for films. His daughters, Anju (Ansiba Hassan) and Anu (Esther Anil) are in college and high school respectively. Rani (Meena), the doting, loving wife and mother, is often worried if ‘their past’ will come to haunt the family.

The Varun-missing case is discussed at the local tea shop and within day-to-day conversations. As expected, the same villagers who were supportive of the Georgekutty's family have started talking behind their backs.

As the film focuses on the investigation again, IPS officer Thomas Bastin (Murali Gopi) and Varun’s parents -- Geetha and Prabhakar -- (Asha Sharath and Siddique) come into picture.

While ‘Drishyam’ might have left many morality-binding people disappointed at Georgekutty and his family getting away with their crime, ‘Drishyam 2’ tells us how guilt and fear can override one’s life. The crime and the story become more real here.

In fact, by the end, you will be split between rooting for the loving and protective Georgekutty who can do anything for his family, and scared of what he can think, foresee and do.

Mohanlal as the doting and protective father is convincing. Even though we miss his typical realistic facial expressions, the actor’s eyes and dialogue delivery do the trick. Meena is perfect as the typical caring mother. It is a plus that the main characters are retained for the sequel.

The film can seem to drag at some points but how it prioritises attention to details has to be appreciated. Jeethu Joseph succeeds in more ways than one. To tightly knit a screenplay as complex as this with minimal flaws is no mean feat. You also wonder if Jeethu had a sequel in mind while writing the first installment.

Not many thrillers have succeeded to impress an audience by intensifying the original's plot and that's the clinching proof of this film's special quality.

‘Drishyam 2’ is a worthy sequel with Mohanlal, as always, stealing the show.
