Apollo wants medical board to examine Jaya treatment

In a new twist, Apollo Hospitals which treated former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa for 75 days in 2016 has demanded constitution of a medical board to examine the treatment given to her.

The corporate hospital wants a panel of medical experts to go into the treatment given to Jayalalithaa and not by the one-man commission appointed by the Tamil Nadu government.

Ironically, the demand for setting up of a medical board consisting of 21 experts was suggested to the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission that is going into the circumstances leading to the hospitalisation and subsequent death of Jayalalithaa.

In an affidavit filed on Friday, the hospital said serious errors have been noticed in the depositions of doctors which had been recorded by the Commission. “For instance, “intubation” became “incubation” while “Enterococcus bacteria” has been recorded as “endocarditis bacteria,” it said.

The hospital, while being critical of Commission, said such errors would be fatal to the commission's own understanding of the facts and circumstances surrounding Jayalalithaa's treatment and subsequent death.

It also alleged that though the Commission has not taken the help of doctors despite a clear direction from the government. Several top doctors and nurses of the hospital have deposed before the Commission, besides submission of voluminous medical records.
